Hydrangea cultivation and care conditions:

Hydrangeas are among the most popular ornamental shrubs. Colourful and abundant flowers decorate home gardens. About 35 species of hydrangeas occur worldwide. The most popular species are: garden hydrangea, panicle hydrangea, serrated hydrangea, climbing hydrangea and oakleaf hydrangea. In home gardens, we can distinguish two groups of hydrangeas. The first blooms on last year's shoots (forming flowers in the second half of summer), and the second blooms on this year's shoots.

Shrubs are planted in places not exposed to strong sunlight and sheltered from the wind. These plants prefer shaded locations with acidic and slightly acidic growing medium - pH ranges from 4.5 to 5.5. Suitable pH values for blue varieties are 4.5-5.0, and for pink and red varieties 5.5. Hydrangeas can be planted throughout the growing season, from spring to late autumn. Flowers planted in spring require abundant watering. Most hydrangea species and varieties bloom in summer and autumn, so transplanting should be done in early spring. Hydrangeas tolerate low temperatures poorly (especially garden hydrangea).

Due to their size and abundant flowering, hydrangeas require care to maintain proper moisture in the growing medium, which involves correct watering. These plants feel water deficiency especially during flowering. Hydrangeas are best watered with soft water, which will not cause alkalisation of the growing medium. Plants need regular watering, and during summer heat should be watered 2-3 times a day.

Proper fertilisation of hydrangeas provides nutrients essential for the correct functioning of the plant and its growth. Basic nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium positively affect shrub growth and appearance as well as better flower colouring. During the growing season, hydrangeas require appropriate acidification of the soil. Shrubs are fed from spring and throughout the flowering period. Fertilisation should be done no later than the end of August; constant feeding with nutrients delays shoot lignification and exposes the plant to frost damage.

Panicle hydrangea should be pruned every year, which should be done in early spring above the fourth bud of each shoot. Garden hydrangea, distinguished by pink, blue or white flowers, does not require cutting or shortening. In early spring it only needs light correction, removal of frost-damaged or diseased shoots, and after flowering removal of inflorescences. Warning! If garden hydrangea shoots are cut at ground level, the shrub will not bloom.

After leaf fall, hydrangea shrubs should be properly protected for winter, e.g. by wrapping them with agrotextile or covering the lower part of the shrub with bark or peat. This procedure protects against adverse weather conditions that can damage the plant, freeze flower buds, leading to lack of flowering. Covering hydrangeas should begin before the first frosts. It is very important to remove damaged and diseased shoots before covering hydrangeas.

Granulated fertiliser for hydrangeas Twój Ogród - usage tips:

  • Fertilisers should be used in a balanced way, and fertilisation should be based on the plant's needs and the growing medium's fertility.
  • Prevent fertiliser from reaching surfaces not intended for fertilisation.
  • Store fertiliser in closed, original packaging, in dry rooms, away from food and feed, in places inaccessible to children.
  • During storage and transport, protect from heat, direct sunlight, moisture and mechanical damage to packaging.
  • Shelf life - unlimited if storage conditions are met.
