Growing conditions and care for perennials:

Perennials are valuable plants that live for many years. Colourful and fragrant flowers beautify our garden.

Planting perennials in a flowerbed requires clearing the soil of weeds and good loosening. Depending on the chosen plant, soil pH should be checked to determine if the current growing medium condition needs correction. If the soil is prepared for planting, it is worth measuring the area to be planted to select the optimal number of perennials per flowerbed. Usually, perennials are planted several per 1m2. For seedlings bought in pots, it is advisable to apply U-Korzonek by Twój Ogród before planting.

Note! Plants in pots should be planted in the soil at the same depth as the pot height.

During drought and sunny weather, perennials require abundant watering. Regular watering is mainly recommended in the first year. Older plants do not require as much water for proper functioning. Watering is best done in the evening when the sun is not shining to prevent water evaporation. Newly planted plants require constant moisture; watering frequency depends on weather and soil condition where they are planted.

Freshly planted plants should not be fertilised for the first month. Perennials prefer fertilisers rich in micronutrients that support proper development. Fertilisation of perennials should start from March to July to prepare plants for winter and accumulate all necessary micronutrients.

To help plants survive winter, cover their roots with bark, straw, sawdust or agrotextile. Perennials are protected from frost when temperatures drop below zero. Early covering of flowerbeds may slow the plant's transition to dormancy, which can promote freezing damage. In spring, be careful with temperature to avoid removing protective cover too early and exposing plants to thermal shock that may destroy them.

The best protection against pests and diseases is choosing good planting material. The most common diseases in perennials are powdery mildew, rusts, rots and dieback. Pests causing significant damage to perennials include slugs, aphids, spider mites, caterpillars and scale insects. Diseases and pests are controlled with appropriate products targeted to the specific problem.
