Growing conditions and care for rhododendrons, azaleas and magnolias:

Rhododendrons, azaleas and magnolias are colourful shrubs that bloom profusely. They decorate home gardens and attract the attention of many people with their charm. These shrubs can be planted in almost any home garden. The plants are characterised by large colourful inflorescences, which occur in many colour shades - white, red, purple, orange, shades of pink.

The plants prefer locations with good air humidity, shaded, sheltered from the wind. The growing medium should have a pH between 4 and 5.5, be constantly moist and contain a high content of organic matter. Rhododendrons, azaleas and magnolias have a shallow, small root system, so we can plant shrubs next to plants with a deeper root system, e.g. next to an oak.

The plants like moist growing medium which must not be too wet to prevent root rot. The shrubs need regular watering, especially in spring and late autumn. Well-cultivated rhododendrons will delight with their extremely colourful appearance every year.

Shrubs should be planted between April and September. Planting rhododendrons is not complicated. Just dig a hole four times larger than the root system taken out of the pot and fill it with soil. Then mulch around the shrub, e.g. with bark, to protect the shrub from excessive weed growth and moisture loss. It is worth remembering not to damage the root system when weeds appear and are pulled out by hand.

Rhododendrons, azaleas and magnolias do not require pruning. It is enough to cut off dead or damaged branches. Every few years after flowering, rejuvenation pruning can be performed.

Rhododendrons, azaleas and magnolias are moderately frost-resistant. They tolerate temperatures of -15, -20°C, but lower temperatures may damage them. Regular feeding with fertiliser containing micronutrients will help keep the plant in good condition and strengthen its resistance to fungal diseases. It is important that the fertiliser has an acidifying effect and is suitable for acid-loving plants.

Granular fertiliser for rhododendrons, azaleas and magnolias Twój Ogród - usage tips:

  • Fertilisers should be used in a balanced way, and fertilisation should be based on the plant's needs and the growing medium's nutrient content.
