Action of Carbide
Carbide (CaC2) is a chemical compound of calcium and carbon (calcium carbide). It decomposes upon contact with moisture, and when in contact with water or soil moisture undergoes a rapid reaction, releasing acetylene. This gas is very irritating and suffocating.
