Blueberry cultivation and care conditions:

Blueberries prefer sheltered garden locations, warm and sunny, where fruits develop good colour, gain flavour, and cope better during winter. Young bushes should be protected against frost in winter. Frost resistance varies depending on the variety. Blueberries are sensitive to spring frosts in May.

For good growth, abundant flowering, and fruiting, blueberries should be planted in fertile and weed-free soils. The best growing medium for blueberries is humus-rich soil with an acidic pH from 3.5 to 4.6.

Proper care and regular fertilisation of blueberry bushes should be carried out until the end of July, using compound mineral fertilisers containing micro and macronutrients. Blueberries should be watered frequently to keep the soil constantly moist, avoiding wetting leaves and flowers.

Mulching the soil positively affects growth, flowering, and fruiting. Bark is most commonly used, which limits weed growth, retains soil moisture, and additionally acidifies the soil.

Without proper fertilisation, blueberries quickly show deficiencies of essential elements, visible as poorer plant growth, small fruits, and less intense flavour. Lack of regular feeding with fertilisers containing micro and macronutrients weakens the bush, increasing susceptibility to diseases and pest attacks.

Pruning blueberries during the first 3-4 years after planting involves sanitary pruning, which means removing diseased, frost-damaged, weak, and mechanically damaged shoots. From about the 4th-5th year after planting, rejuvenation and thinning pruning should be performed cyclically, involving shortening and removing the oldest, overly dense shoots. The bush should have 6 to 8 main shoots. Blueberries produce the highest yield on 2-3 year old shoots. Pruning is best done at the end of winter or early spring.
