Growing and care conditions for fruit trees and shrubs:
Fruit trees and shrubs have many advantages. By planting fruit trees and shrubs, we can obtain fruits without excessive use of chemicals, or even organic fruits. It is good to pay attention to the ripening time of our fruits. Early apple varieties bear fruit as early as July, while later ones in October. Other fruit trees and shrubs ripen during summer. Creating a home orchard allows us to enjoy beautiful fruits that can be used for preserves, liqueurs and homemade baking. It is worth remembering to choose disease-resistant varieties of fruit trees and shrubs for allotments and home gardens.
The basic step in fertilisation is enriching the soil with mineral or organic fertilisers. Fruit trees and shrubs yield best on loamy-sandy soil rich in humus. Mineral fertilisers should contain macroelements and micronutrients boron, iron, zinc. The nutrient requirements of fruit trees and shrubs vary depending on factors such as plant age, season and type of growing medium. Plants are fertilised during vegetation, on a moderately warm and humid day, spreading fertiliser around the tree at a distance of about 1.5 times the crown size, then raking and watering the growing medium.
Young trees (especially during drought) should be watered frequently and abundantly, while older plants are better watered less often. On sunny days, watering should be done in the morning or evening.
Pear trees, apple trees and plum trees are pruned at the end of February, peaches are best pruned when it is warmer and buds appear. Sour cherry and sweet cherry are pruned after fruit harvest, as trees are less susceptible to bacterial canker infections at this time. When shaping crowns, vertically growing shoots called water sprouts are cut out, one-year shoots are also removed and overly dense parts thinned. Shoots growing downwards or into the crown centre and crossing shoots are removed. Cuts are made 3 to 4 mm above the bud. The purpose of pruning is to obtain the desired crown shape, well illuminated.
In winter, young, newly planted fruit trees and shrubs should be protected first. Effective protective measures include mounding soil at the base of trunks, protective guards against rodents and deer, and whitewashing fruit tree trunks.
Granular fertiliser for fruit trees and shrubs Twój Ogród - usage tips:
