Growing and care conditions for tomatoes and cucumbers:
Tomatoes and cucumbers are seasonal plants rich in beneficial vitamins. Tomato is a fruit that contains lycopene, a chemical compound with antioxidant properties that reduces the risk of heart attack. Cucumbers contain a lot of water, which supports the urinary system and kidney function.
Tomatoes and cucumbers grow best in well-sunny, quickly warming places. The location should be sheltered from the wind. The plants prefer light but fertile and adequately moist soils. The growing medium for tomatoes and cucumbers should have a pH from 5.5 to 6.5.
Cucumbers should be sown directly into the ground preferably at the end of May when there is no risk of spring frosts. Cucumbers can also be planted as seedlings spaced 60 cm apart in rows 100-120 cm apart.
Tomato seedlings should be 15 to 30 cm tall with about 5-7 well-developed green leaves. Overgrown plants indicate insufficient light during growth. Light green leaves, yellowing, brown spots and discolorations, curled edges are symptoms of improper nutrient supply. Well-developed seedlings allow for earlier harvest and can shorten the tomato growing period by up to 40 days.
Cucumbers and tomatoes should be watered in the morning to avoid fungal diseases and leaf damage. It is important to water the plants in appropriate amounts to ensure the fruits are firm and large.
During strong development and fruit setting, tomatoes and cucumbers have increased nutrient requirements. To avoid nutrient deficiency symptoms, fertilisation of tomatoes and cucumbers should start about 3 weeks after planting seedlings and be repeated every two to three weeks. Feeding of tomatoes and cucumbers should end 3-4 weeks before the planned end of cultivation.
